An Invitation for Social Practice Public Art Tour on City Bus + Video Launch
SPARK is pleased to promote the major group exhibition and public art project, Recognition… Validation… Reassurance… Art + Mental Wellness, taking place at cSPACE and Calgary Transit locations across the City!
For Bell Let’s Talk Day (January 29), the general public is invited to participate in an artist talk and video launch marking the conclusion of the City's first social practice public art project. Presented by lead artist Dick Averns, this free public program takes place on a City of Calgary Transit bus featuring a curated gallery of artwork created by community participants. Drawings, collage and text-based art fill the overhead interior panels of the bus, all addressing the question “How do You Create a Framework for Mental Wellness?”
During the tour, Averns will narrate the ins and outs of this dynamic project, including how art as social practice provides benefits for participants and broader communities. The tour has three pick-up stops and covers specific themes before arriving at a larger gallery exhibition at cSPACE:
AUArts departing 11 am. How did this project begin and what is social practice?
Fresh Start Recovery Centre departing 11.15 am How was our community involved?
City Hall/Arts Commons departing 11.30 am How were the workshops & art produced?
Arriving at cSPACE noon
Reception, Video Screening, Q+A, Free Refreshments, noon-1pm
Return rides will be available from cSPACE the same afternoon:
